QR students into pairs

I used QR codes in the classroom to get students into random pairs last week. Each student was given a label with a QR code on. They had to scan themselves to see if they was an answer or a question. If they had a question they had to scan the other people in the class to find their answer.

For example if a student as 2+2 when they scan themselves they have to scan the other students in the room to see who has the number 4.

AirServer – An Apple TV Alternative?

Yesterday I stumbled across AirServer, http://www.airserverapp.com/. My first impression was “this is going to be a poor attempt at an app” or “I bet it only works with certain apps” however to my amazement this works with every app. It supports mirroring on the iPhone 4s and iPad 2 / new ipad.

All of a sudden it had my attention and I was impressed.  Setup was easy simply install and pick a name and bang my iPhone 4s showed the AirPlay icon I clicked my MacBook and whatever was on my iPhone was display on my mac.

I walked around trying it with a low signal and it held out pretty well, I played games, movies and music to see if it stuttered and to my amazement it didn’t.  Even the sound comes through the Mac just like an Apple TV.

For only £8 for 3 Pcs / Macs this is a contender for schools that can’t yet afford to be buying Apple TVs for the classroom. I can’t wait to use this in the classrooms after 1/2 term, all of a sudden the way we use the iPad and iPhone can change…… all for just £2.60.

In the future I hope the iPod touch supports mirroring using AirPlay.

Whilst AirServer is great I think with the mirroring coming with the new realsese of Apples OS mountain Lion much supports mirroring via a Mac then the Apple TV will be the choice of hardware for the classroom.  Until then AirServer is a sure winner for me!!

What are you thoughts on it? Have you tried using it?

Well that failed…..

I started #edtechcc by completeing the Preliminary Task, and I must admit I felt a little smug finishing this assignemnt early then it all went down hill…….I got man flu but worse!! Had too much to do at work and got behind on all my uni work so didn’t actually end up copleteing any of the Ed Tech CC assignments.

I did however follow them via Twitter and learnt a lot of stuff from it.

Something clicked today, I now have more free time, besides trying to fill it with going out with friends all the time (which is expensive!!) I’ll start to update my blog and Twitter regularly with any interesting apps, lessons or something that makes learning for kids exciting.

#edtechcc My Preliminary Task

Hello my name is Lewis.  I always talk to a lot of the students at Collegiate High School, in Blackpool, about the rapid growth of Blogs and Social Media like Twitter, and am always telling staff that we need to be using this new medium to communicate with each other but I have a confession…………. Yes I am registered on them, but I don’t actually use them, 2012 is the year that I will start to use this social media to collaborate with other educators – this brings me to the reason as to why I am writing this blog,  The Educational Technology Creative Collective.

As professionals I believe that we should all be sharing our best practice with other professionals, and with the use of the internet this can now be done on a global scale.   As we hear all the time “technology is changing so quickly that its hard to keep up” but do we change the way we deliver our lessons at the same speed to keep up with the students?

I really enjoy collaborating with fellow educators, talking about and trying new ideas, some work and some don’t, but thats the good thing about trying new things – It doesn’t always matter if it doesn’t work. As long as the good digital technologies enhances education in such a way that it outweighs the not so good digital technologies that we have tried then something is right.

I hope that Edtechcc will open our school doors to new ways to use digital technology that will enhance and inspire our young people we teach preparing them for jobs which don’t yet exist (now thats a hard task!!)

The end goal, in all this, is to be a better educator, be able to pass new ideas onto the staff at Collegiate so they can use it in lessons and to gain experience and understanding of different technologies oh and of course I do hope this is a fun experience and hope to meet a lot of people out of this.

Our school as just started to use Google + so I hope this shows that our SLT team is not a barrier against using new technologies.  This Year all our Year 7s have been equipped with an iPod touch so I am certainly in a position to give this new technology a try.

Over and out!
Lewis
